Meta shut down the Messenger desktop app. Where should your team answer Page messages now?
The Messenger apps for Windows and Mac stopped working in December 2025. Options for teams that answer customers from a Facebook Page — and why a shared inbox beats browser tabs.
Meta announced in October 2025 that it would retire the standalone Messenger desktop apps for Windows and macOS, and on December 15, 2025 they stopped working. Personal users were pointed to the Facebook website, messenger.com and the mobile apps.
For businesses, the change was a reminder that Page conversations deserve a proper workspace. A browser tab works for one person; it doesn’t tell a team who owns a conversation, it doesn’t ring three people when a customer calls, and it mixes customer chats with everything else in Facebook.
What teams actually need
- One inbox for the Page, shared by everyone who answers customers.
- Clear ownership — assigned, mine and unassigned views.
- Calls handled on the desktop, not on whoever’s phone is closest.
- History that stays with the business when a teammate leaves.
Messenger calling for businesses
Meta’s Messenger Business Calling API lets Pages in supported countries take voice calls from customers, call them back with permission and enable video during a call. ThreadWave uses it so Messenger calls ring every available teammate, alongside WhatsApp calls and phone calls from Twilio or Telnyx.
Messenger calling is available to Pages in a list of supported countries. ThreadWave checks eligibility when you connect your Page.
